Boys swimming team wraps season with sectional finish

February 26, 2013
Southport High School

The Cards swimming team was at Franklin Community Thursday (Feb. 14) and Saturday (Feb. 16) for their sectional meet.  Teams present at the meet were Franklin Community, Center Grove, Perry Meridian, Roncalli, Indian Creek, Whiteland, Greenwood, Martinsville, Mooresville, Southport and Owen Valley.  The Cards took 10th out of eleven teams with a total score of 56 points.

“We’re very proud of the team,” assistant coach Josef Horvath said.  “All though many of the boys dropped time, unfortunately not all of them got to go on to Saturday.  We were very happy with their performances.”

Advancing to the Saturday Sectional were junior James Paden in the 100-yard breaststroke where he came in 12th and in the 200-yard IM where he came in 14th, freshman Sam Collins in the 100-yard backstroke where he came in 11th, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of senior Jake Johnston, juniors Paden and Joseph Morris, and sophomore Anthony Bueckers who came in 9th and the 200-yard IM relay team of Johnston, Paden, Bueckers and Collins.

Paden had some to say about his performances at Sectionals.

“The meet went really, really well,” Paden said.  “We were worn out for most the season, but now that we were rested we had what we needed for Sectionals.  Though people were nervous, this was the meet that we actually trained for, so we were ready.  Next year we hope to go at Sectionals again like this year.  I’ll be glad to get back to the team next season as I prepare for my last year.”

This is the end of the season for the Cards and the assistant coach had a few things to say.

“This season was all about learning,” Horvath said.  “We’re taking some things we did this year and changing them for next year.  We’re going to educate the under classmen more than we did this year.  We’re happy with the maturity the upper classmen showed this season and we’re happy with how much time each individual has dropped.  There will be only one senior leaving this year, Jake Johnston, so next year is already looking up.”

Thank you for supporting the boys throughout their season.
