Cards basketball team finally gets first win

January 29, 2013
Southport High School

The boys varsity basketball team got their first win of the season against Franklin Community this past Saturday (Jan. 26). The score of the game was 51-48.

Sophomore Malik Bennett led the Cards in points with 17 points, junior Tim Jewell had 16 points and senior Quinton Sanders followed with 10 points and six rebounds.

Head varsity coach Mr. Kyle Simpson thought his team played hard.

“We played hard and fought throughout the entire game even when we were down,” Simpson said.

Simpson also thought junior Thomas Garrett played well and gave his team a spark off the bench in the 4th quarter.

The boys lost to Columbus North this weekend as well. The score of the game was 78-39.

Sanders led the Cards in scoring with 13 points and Bennett had 12 points.

The Cards will take on rivals Perry Meridian Friday, (Feb. 1). In between the junior-varsity and varsity games, former Southport basketball star Louie Dampier’s number will be retired.

Come out and support your Cards.
