Cardinal Profile: Jake Johnston

November 12, 2012
Southport High School

Jake Johnston is the only senior on the boys swimming team this season.

“Being the only senior on the team makes me want be a leader and everyone looks up to me,” Johnston said.

Johnston got into swimming during his sophomore year.  His friends influenced him to try it and he kept with it.  He also needed a workout, so this was an opportunity for him.

Johnston predicts that this season everyone will be improving their times due to the pickup in intensity.  He is also looking to use the intense practices to improve his own times.  Johnston will be competing in the 100 meter fly, 50 meter freestyle, medley relay, and 200 meter freestyle relay.

“My best memory on the team is going to the lock-ins,” Johnston said.  “We stay up all night, play games, and swim.  It’s a team building experience.”

Besides swimming Johnston enjoys men’s volleyball and hanging out with friends.  He also has a job delivering pizza.

After high school, Johnston is looking at IU as a potential college, but he would like to focus on academics in college, so he says he probably won’t swim.
