Cards wrestling to open season with new coach

Head coach Mr. David Walpole has coached wrestling at Perry Meridian for the last four years, but he is now the head coach for wrestling here.

“It’s a good feeling,” Walpole said, “going from Perry to Southport. I wouldn’t trade my experiences with Perry Meridian for anything. I won two state championships there as an assistant coach, but my goal has always been to be a head wrestling coach. Southport gave me that opportunity and I’m going to make the most out of it.”

Walpole wants to make the wrestlers better, make them compete and he also hopes to build the program up to where it can be and where it’s been.

“We are working on a lot of things to get tougher,” Walpole said. “We are drilling a lot of intense moves, everything we do is intense, and we don’t stand around, they’re always moving.”

Right now Walpole is mainly working on making sure the boys are tough and are in good shape.

Senior captain Casey Kauffman is a key returner this year for the Cards. But this season will be a lot of differences for him because of the new coach.

“It’s definitely a lot different because I had the same coach in seventh grade,” Kauffman said. “Wrestling is wrestling no matter who the coach is.”

Kauffman likes being a senior on the team because he feels he has more of a leadership role.

The Cards first wrestling meet will be a home meet, held on Nov. 14^th against Decatur Central and scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm.
