Swimming team to open season with very young team
November 5, 2012Southport High School
The boys and girls swimming team is diving into another season. Head coach Mr. Matthew Jeffries is now starting his fourth season as the swimming coach. Last season he led the girls through a season filled with learning and for the boys a season that was really good according to Jeffries.
“We lost many seniors after last season,” Jeffries said.
The girl’s team lost Rachael Foster and the boys lost Jake Lauster, Dustin Baker, David Dart, Cody Camp and Matt Gamboa.
Key returners for the girls are seniors Sarah Barnhart, Anna Hill and Carly Chappell. Key returners for the boys are juniors James Paden and Justin Barringer.
In order to fill these voids left by the seniors, Jeffries has intensified practice and is challenging the younger swimmers to step up.
“We made the intensity higher and practices longer,” Jeffries said.
The practices are putting a great emphasis on power, movement, dry land, which includes workouts out of water such as weightlifting and cardio, and strength to body weight ratio which is a swimmer’s strength in comparison to their body weight.
