Home » Football NewsCards football loses Conference OpenerSeptember 4, 2012 By Nick Holland of Southport High SchoolThe football team lost its Conference Indiana opener to the Pike Red Devils this past Friday night, August 31. The score of the game was Red Devils 55, Cards 12. Despite the loss, head coach Mr. Bill Peebles was still optimistic about how his team performed during the game. “Pike is a very good team,” he said. “We would have had to play a near perfect game in order to beat them and we just didn’t. We held our own up front on offense against a mostly Division 1 ridden defensive line.” Senior wide receiver David Boyer was named the player of the game for the Cards, as well as the team’s leading receiver in yards, catches and targets. The Cards next game will be against south side rival Perry Meridian. But despite the hype surrounding the game, Peebles is still sticking to basics for the team. “We are just going to continue to work on fundamentals,” he said. “Also, we are going to work on covering up the ball before hits, and being mentally tough.” The Cards hope they can accomplish these three things when they take on a Perry team that despite their 1-2 record has taken on Center Grove and what many people believe to be the favorite to win Conference Indiana in Lawrence Central. Make sure you come out and support your Cards this Friday night, September 6. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and Southport will be on the away side of the stadium.
