By Nick Holland of Southport High SchoolThe girls track team competed in the Marion County meet last night, May 8. The team overall finished in 9th place out of 16 teams.
There were multiple all-county finishers for the lady Cards, including: seniors Juanesha Byrd in the 100 meter dash, Abby Springer in the 300m hurdles, and Madia Bannie in the long jump. Also, juniors Sydner Barger in pole vault and JaBreena Gardner in high jump both earned all-county honors.
Head coach Mr. Nathan Fishel was very pleased with how most of his team did.
“I was happy with our results tonight,” Fishel said. “But we could have done better if only we had scored some points in some distance events. Some events just make or break meets.”
Fishel was also encouraged by the strong effort that was put out by not only the upperclassmen by the younger players as well.
The girls look to continue to ride high into their next meet which is the sectional meet that is scheduled for next Tuesday, May 15. The meet is here at the Stadium. It is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
