HSI/Blue Grass Spring Tour 2012
February 22, 2012By John Sheridan of ShowJumping Ireland
Having taken the runner up spot on several occasions in last year's Spring Tour, Daniel Coyle finally got his head in front to take the second leg of the HSI/Blue Grass Spring Tour at Ravensdale on Sunday riding Linzi Johnston's Uptown Girl.
Having finished fourth in the opening leg at Kildare International, Coyle steered the Concorde mare to a fine victory in a tight jump off at the Louth venue in a class sponsored by O'Reilly's Wholesalers in Newry.
The pair were very fast to the second fence and again out of the double turning back to a skinny vertical before galloping to the last and they stopped the clock in 33.42 to take their first Senior National win.
John Floody, a previous winner of the Spring Tour, took second with PMR Rehy Irish All Star. This pair were unlucky last week with two poles on the floor at Kildare International but they made no such mistake this week and had set the early standard before the evenutal winner came in a few horses later. Floody's time of 34.72 kept him in the runner up spot and he also took fourth with King's Best in 36.64.
Derry based rider, Christian Coyle placed third with Conor Coyle's Athlet Van'T Lozerhof. This pair joined up late last year and produced some solid results culminating in a win in the Irish Masters at the Northern Indoor Championships at Eglinton last October. They broke the beam in 34.98 to take third.
With Cian O'Connor taking part in the Winter Equestrian Festival in Florida, Mark Kinsella is looking after his Karlswood Base in Meath and he slotted William Kennedy's Kec Corleone into fifth place with a double clear in 36.64. They finished just ahead of Mary McShane with Java's Wild Child who finished the course clear in 39.86 to take sixth place.
Following the class, winning rider Daniel Coyle commented; ''You can always try and win with Uptown Girl because she's more experienced and we know she's good enough. You can always ask her and she will always try her best.''
Coyle also picked up the Leading Young Rider prize which is also kindly sponsored by Blue Grass Horse Feeds.
The Spring Tour now moves to Cavan next Sunday.
