AREA CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEWS

August 12, 2012
Seton Catholic High School

While graduation has taken numerous strong runners from area teams, other cross country standouts do return for area boys and girls high school programs.

Among those with significant recent success is Hagerstown’s girls team, returning sectional champions, and Northeastern’s boys, three-time defending Tri-Eastern Conference team winners.

Head coach Kent Gray is back for his fifth year at the helm of Tiger cross country, with 15 girls out for this greatly successful team, plus 12 boys for their improving team.

Junior Hayley Rogers will be joined by classmates Joanna Smith and Sydney Denhart in leading the Hagerstown charge for the girls team.

Senior Erin Hoodlebrink returns to a varsity scoring slot, and a handful of others will battle for the remaining positions, including the other senior on the team, Sarah Baumer.

Coach Gray expects sophomore Amelia Dick to continue the emergence that began in last spring’s track season, and freshmen Cassidy Robinson and Paige Gray could well play key roles on the team.

“We have a lot of talent to replace,” coach Gray said of four graduated seniors from last year’s team, a qualifier for the semistate meet. Those runners were Kearstin McDaniel, Erin Gray, Kasey Reneau and Nyla Rueter.
