The night before Winter Break is not one for relaxing in the Fox C-6 District. Quite the contrary, actually. Every year since the 2001 season, Fox and Seckman have hooked up in a six game, one evening basketball fest that rivals any of its kind in the region. The games get started early and run late. The Freshmen, JV, and Varsity squads all vie to add another notch on the overall scoreboard to bring home the overall Fox C-6 School District Showcase trophy. The date, like all C-6 meetings, is not just about the competition on the floor, but also community. Recent grads often use the games as a convenient meeting place while home for the Winter break from various colleges and universities across the region. Less recent grads are often found chatting and reliving moments from their own Showcases. The rivalries, while still intense, are quite friendly and full of mutual respect. Brian Metteer and Christy Lane are even coaching on the opposite side of the Showcase than the one they played on (Lane was a standout at Seckman and Metteer battled the boards as a Warrior.) While the overall trophy has never made its way up to Arnold, the games generally are tight affairs that provide a great atmosphere that is not seen at many high school athletic competitions any more. The student sections seem to be a little more amped up while staring at two weeks without quizzes, tests, or homework in the immediate future. Whether you bleed blue or red, this has become a must attend event, not rivaled by many around. The unique setup of all three levels of both genders playing in one night allows the basketball community in the district to have one night that is just about them. This is their night to shine and take some bragging rights with them if the breaks fall their way. If your team should fall, don’t fret; just meet in the Fox gym next December 21st. I’m sure you’ll see a friend or two. Archived BroadcastsVolleyballSep 20, 2012
