For the past 26 years that the Mt. Pleasant Panther Marching Band has entered the State Marching Band Festival, they have earned a top Division I rating. This Saturday the band will go for number 27.
The IHSMA District 8 State Marching Festival is being hosted by Davenport Central High School and will take place at Brady Street Stadium. The Panther Marching Band is scheduled to take the field at 1:55 PM.
Jim DePriest, high school band director, is in his 20th year at MPCHS. He points out that the band has received a "1" rating in 40 of the last 41 years and that this year's group is anxious to continue a proud tradition.
This year's show is titled "The Madness of the Unimagined". The 181 member band includes 30 in the color guard, 149 musicians, and 2 drum majors. Assisting Jim DePriest is Marlene DePriest who guides the color guard, and elementary instrumental director Laura Westfall and middle school instrumental director Adam Creager. Also helping is high school vocal director Phil Schroetter and retired New London band director Ron Coberley.
This will be the final competition of the season for the band, though they will perform one more time next Tuesday night at All Bands Night, showcasing all the bands in the school district.
