The Mt. Pleasant Panther girls soccer team was eager to win their second consecutive West Liberty Tournament on Saturday, but came up short in the third and final game, 1-0 to Clinton.
The day started out as expected, whipping the Columbus Wildcats 4-0. Erin Watt scored three goals and Holly Long one in the victory.
At noon they took on host West Liberty and enjoyed a 3-1 decision over the Comets. Holly Long, Erin Watt, and Linzie Hood tallied goals for the Panthers.
The feature game of the day followed, with the Panthers pitted against the Clinton River Queens out of the powerful Mississippi Athletic Conference. Clinton scored a first half goal and made it stand for the 1-0 win. Mt. Pleasant had several great opportunities to score in the second half but couldn't get it in. Actually, they did get one in, as after the game Panther players said a penalty kick by Holly Long with a little over four minutes remaining did make it over the line but the Clinton goalie pulled it back out, going unoticed by the officiating crew.
Mt. Pleasant is now 10-6 this season and will tangle with a good Clear Creek-Amana squad Monday at East Lake Park. It will be parents night and also the team's lone senior, Hannah LeBlanc, will be recognized. LeBlanc has accepted a scholarship from Culver-Stockton College to continue her soccer career.
