April 28, 2014By Dalton Schmidt of Lakeland High School
Lakeland’s varsity baseball team picked up their first win last Friday as they defeated Whitko 5-1. They then went on to drop both games of the double header Saturday to Woodlan.
The Laker bats came alive Friday, after only combining for 10 hits over their last three games they produced 12 to help down the Wildcats. Helping the Laker charge was sophomore Derrick Dunn who had two hits, one of which was a double, and two RBI’s. Also chipping in two hits were William Kelly, Morgan Moore and Sammy Garcia. Moore and Dylan Panger both had an RBI. Pranger picked up the win as he went all seven innings, allowing only one run on five hits and striking out 11.
The Lakers would then head to Woodlan for a double header on Saturday. They dropped the first game 10-0, and the second game 13-8.
At the plate Kyle Casper, Derrick Dunn, William Kelly and Dalton Schmidt all had hits for the Lakers for the first game. For the second game Kelly stayed hot as he went 3-4 with a double and scored three times. Skyler Booth and Hunter Sams both added two hits, while Dunn and Jackson Evans had one. Sams had a whopping five RBI’s to go along with Booth’s one and Evans’s two which game off a two run homer.
The boys are in action today as they host the Fairfield Falcons in the first round of NECC tournament play.
