February 25, 2013By Chandler Mynhier of Lakeland High School
The Lakeland Lakers wrapped up their season Friday night as they were defeated by the Angola Hornets 53-44. Both teams got off to a hot start in the first quarter scoring a combined 25 points but a mere four points in the second quarter put the Lakers down eight at the end of the first half. Midway through the third quarter Lakeland trailed by as many as 16 to the Hornets but the Lakers made their push cutting the lead down to as few as four points. The run came too late for the Lakers as the time soon ran out. Lakeland was led by Senior Spencer Mortola who had 25 points to lead all scorers. Junior Chandler Mynhier added seven points while Mitch Herber pitched in six points. The Lakers finished 6-15 on the season and 3-7 in conference. Lakeland will play the winner of Tippecanoe Valley and Wawasee Friday night in sectionals.
The Lakeland JV finished the season with a victory as they defeated the Hornets 35-30. Freshman Josh Collyer led the way for the Lakers with 11 points while Tanner Oakley added eight points and Austin Hoffelder had seven points.
