Lakers Win in Double OT

The Lakeland boys' basketball team defeated the Churubusco Eagles 62-57 in double overtime Friday night. The Lakers led by three at the end of the first half but the Eagles made their run in the begining of the second half as they outscored the Lakers 15-9 in the third quarter. Lakeland cut the Eagles lead in the fourth quarter after outscoring them 11-8 and tying the game at 42 and sending it in to overtime. With just seconds left in the first overtime Lakeland was trailing by three points when Senior Spencer Mortola was fouled on a three point attempt with just 11.6 seconds remaining. After Mortola made all three free throws the game was sent into a second overtime where the Lakers edged the Eagles by outscoring them 13-8. Lakeland had three different players in double figures in the game. Spencer Mortola led the way with 21 points, Marco Olivares had 15, Chandler Mynhier added 14 points and Brant Betts had 10 points. Free throws proved crucial for the Lakers as they were a perfect 17-17 in the second half and overtime and 24-27 on the night. The win bumps the Lakers to 5-11 on the season.
