The Carroll (Fort Wayne) boys’ basketball team used big second and third quarters to defeat Huntington North 67-43 and pick up its first victory of the season on Saturday night.
Carroll combined to outscore Huntington North 45-18 in the second and third quarters.
“We started off the game well, but then they made some adjustments and we didn’t do a good job of adjusting to what they were doing,” Huntington North coach Rob Irwin said. “I feel really bad for the kids, because this loss is on me and not on the kids. The kids bought in to what we were coaching them, and I just didn’t come through for them. This loss is on me and is something that is going to be fixed this week. The kids deserve better than what I gave them on Saturday night.”
The Chargers ended the Vikings’ three-game winning streak, as Huntington North dropped to 3-2 on the season. Carroll moved to 1-4 on the season.
The Chargers also increased their winning streak over Huntington to six games. The Vikings have not defeated the Chargers since a 58-51 decision on Dec. 8, 2006.
Huntington North had an 18-15 lead after the opening quarter, but was outscored 23-8 in the second quarter to head into halftime trailing 38-26.
Carroll then outscored Huntington North 22-10 in the third quarter to take a 60-36 lead into the fourth quarter. Both teams scored seven points in the final eight minutes.
Huntington North provided a balanced offensive attack with four players scoring at least nine points.
Kalvin Miller and Matt Hogan led the Vikings with 10 points each. Miller also had two steals and one assist. Hogan had three rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Senior Noah Reed, the Vikings leading scorer going into the game at 17.8 points per game, was limited to nine points on Saturday. Reed did have a team-high four assists and also grabbed one rebound.
Trenton Kern joined Reed with nine points. Kern also had two rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Kyle Platt had three points and three rebounds along with one assist and one steal in the loss. Austin Garde had two points, two rebounds and one assist.
Saturday’s game was the start of a long road swing for the Vikings. Huntington North opens North Central Conference play on Friday at Richmond. Huntington North then travels to Fort Wayne Wayne on Saturday.
