![]() READY TO GO - Haley Bruemleve and the Huntington North girls' tennis team opens its season today with a home match against Peru.
With a wealth of experience returning, the Huntington North girls’ tennis team is eyeing big things this spring. The Vikings — who open the season today with a 4:30 p.m. home match against Peru — have a lineup full of girls who spent time on varsity a year ago. All but one of the seven netters in coach Blake Childs’ lineup played the entirety of last season on varsity. “I am expecting to be competitive in the North Central Conference and be in a position where we can win conference,” Childs said. “We have a really good team this year, and I am looking forward to seeing how the ladies perform.” Taryn Wuensch is back for her third season at No. 1 singles. The Vikes also return both of their doubles teams from a year ago. Jericho Parrett and Macy Phillips will hold down the No. 1 doubles spot while Anne Hacker and Ashley Bard make up the No. 2 doubles squad. Haley Bruemleve is set to play No. 2 singles. Megan Leedy, another returning varsity player, will fill in the No. 3 singles slot. “To be competitive in the NCC,” Childs said, “we need to be consistent and play our style of tennis and not the person we are playing. We also need to make sure that we win the matches that we should have a chance at winning, and then hope to steal a win from some of the top teams.” Huntington North begins conference play April 19 at Marion. The Vikings first home NCC tilt comes May 3 against Kokomo.
