Eyeing District Titles

The Johnson Central soccer squads are well into their respective seasons and both are looking to keep building the program after successful seasons last year.
The boy’s soccer team holds a record of 3 wins and 2 losses so far this 2009 season. Led by 5 seniors, Caleb Sloan, Andrew Brown, Jarred Curtis, Joey Montgomery, and Josh Leckrone, this team is hoping to repeat as district champions, and Coach Dwight Chafins feels like they certainly have the potential to do so.
“We are really strong offensively and the defense is coming along and should end up being one of the better defenses in districts by the end of the season,” stated Chafins. With 5 returning seniors this year Coach Chafins said, “Winning districts again this year is the plan and we are coming together as a team very well.”
Meanwhile, the Johnson Central Lady Eagles have started out strong with a record of 3 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie (against district rival Paintsville). Despite losing 6 senior players last year, the squad has not been discouraged and the team is determined to fill those voids left by last year’s graduates.
With 10 returning seniors with 3 years experience behind them, the girl’s soccer team is also looking for their second consecutive district championship this year.
Coach Terri Burford said she thinks the girls have the potential to win another and that the key is to keep working hard toward that goal. “I think we are improving after every game,” Burford said.
