Johnson Central Opens District Play With Win

Strong 2-0 Start For The Golden Eagles

Salyersville – Just over a year ago, Johnson Central took a deflating loss to Magoffin County in an early season district match-up as a last second 3 pointer was made by J.D. Kazee.

This year there would be no question as to whether a buzzer-beater was needed. The Golden Eagles took some revenge for the previous years' early season loss as the Johnson Central Golden Eagles (2-0 overall; 1-0 District) defeated the Magoffin County Hornets (0-2; 0-1 District) in a final score of 82-51 to remain undefeated in this years' 2012-13 campaign.

Junior Shane Hall took control inside and didn't give it back. He exploded for 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Slade McPeek also attributed 10 points. Sophomores Braxton Blair and Kyle Gullett added in 15 and 8 points respectively.

The Golden Eagles took a quick start and didn't stop running away. They out-scored the Hornets 23-13 at the end of the 1st and had a 22 point lead at half.

The Eagle Big-Men did meet some competition in the paint though. Junior Hornet Corey Pitts hauled in a Double-Double consisting of 16 points and 13 rebounds, 10 of which coming from the defensive end. Also, 8th grader Trenton Russell produced 12 points.

As a team, Johnson Central had an ever so slight edge in rebounds. They snagged 37 boards, opposed to Magoffin Counties 35. The Golden Eagles had a huge advantage in Field Goal Percentage. They out-shot the Hornets 50% to 32.6%. Johnson Central was; however, triumphed by the Hornets at the Free-Throw line in terms of percentage. The Hornets went 17/22 (77.3%) and the Golden Eagles went 21/33 (63.6%).
