Shelby runners move on to state

By Staff Report Led by a strong group of runners, Shelby County's boys track team finished fourth at the Class AAA Region 4 meet this week at Male High School in Louisville. Shelby totaled 68 points in trailing winner Ballard (126), Trinity (122) and Oldham County (79). Shelby's girls finished seventh with 15 points in the meet also won by Ballard (122). The top two individuals and teams and the other top 10 times will move on to next week's state meet in Louisville, and Shelby County will be well represented. Alec Zaremba and Stacey Eden each won events and contributed to scoring in others. Zaremba won the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 2.13 seconds) by less than a second. He was also second in the 1600 (4:30.53), in which teammate Reid Stivers (4:53.75) took sixth, winning his point by .01 seconds. And Zaremba was part of the 4x800 relay team that finished second (8:07.1). Eden won the 3200-meter run in 9:39.96 and was part of that 4x800 team along with JJ Depasco, who was fourth in the 3200 (10:15.23). Jonathan Pernell was the fourth member of that relay team, Other big scorers for SCHS were Tyler Whitehouse and Edwin Thomas. Whitehouse finished second in the 400 (50.12) and ran on the third-place 4x200 relay team (1:31.25) that missed out on second by .03 seconds.. Edwin Thomas was fifth in the 100 (11:44 seconds) and 200 (23.18), barely missing fourth, and he also ran on the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams. Other contributors on relays were Rico O'Bannon (100 and 200), Tavis Elzy (4x200) and Pernell (4x200). Bryant Swan scored the Rockets' only point in a field event, finishing sixth in a jump off for fifth. He had tied with a leap of 19 feet, 6.5 inches after having tied for the best jump in the qualifying round. Caterina Karas was the star of the girls' team, playing a part in every point in the track events. She was third in the 800 meters (2:27.5) and teamed with Chelsea Schlosnagel, Taylor Webb and Gwen Greene to finish sixth in the 4x400 and with Webb, Alyssa Anderson and Lindsey Miller to finish sixth in the 4x800. Jalin Abernathy earned 3 points by finishing fourth in the discus (81 feet, 6 inches). |
