After a slow start to the world of sports in the local area, games will start heating up this week. In case you didn't hear about it, the bitter cold weather around here caused games to be postponed to later dates.
One of those sports people often overlook in the area is the sport of soccer. I've often noted that I really don't know much about the sport. However, soccer is important to some out there in the area. By the way, there are some really good teams in the local area.
The West Jones Lady Mustangs are still undefeated, and they appear to be on track for making the 5A state championship this year. How cool is that? To win your first 4A State Soccer Championship then the following year win the first ever 5A State Championship. Coach Avilla is doing a good job with the teams over at West Jones, and it appears the boys soccer team is not doing a bad job either.
The Northeast Jones girls soccer team is also off to a good start on the season. The Lady Tigers with the help of Coach Scott Tyson may have what it takes to reach the coveted 4A State Championship.
Oh by the way, Coach Matt Smith and the South Jones Braves are having a memorable season down in Ellisville. The Braves should be the outright favorites to win the region crown, but then again anything can happen.
One final note on soccer is the fact these girls and guys have to play in the toughest conditions like the bitter cold weather, which still remains in the area. I may not know much about the rules of soccer, but I'm beginning to have more of an appreciation of the sport.
We'll start of with the AFC. Baltimore will be on the road to take on the Indianapolis Colts in Indy. I believe Peyton Manning will prove why he is the NFL MVP for the fourth time, but it will be a close game. 28-24 Colts.
In the other AFC game, the New York Jets travel down to Cali to take on the San Diego Chargers. I'm still not sold on the Chargers, and I think Mark Sanchez will shine again. 30-14 J-E-T-S.
In the AFC Championship game, Manning will have the edge over the rookie Sanchez. This game won't even be a close one. 38-17 Colts.
For the NFC, we'll start of with Dallas and Minnesota. The Cowboys are the hottest team in the NFL right now, but the Vikings have Brett Favre for a quarterback, and they have a pretty good running back in Adrian Peterson. My prediction is 34-31 Cowboys.
The other NFC Divisional game will feature the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals are coming off a 51-45 thriller over Green Bay, but they are playing the Saints in the dome surrounded by "Who Dat Nation." Expect another shootout, but I feel the Saints pull through. 41-30 Saints.
The NFC Championship between the Saints and the Cowboys will be a rematch of their Week 13 encounter when Dallas ended the Saints unbeaten streak. In the rematch however, I'm going with New Orleans in a close game. 28-23 Saints.
