Wildcats Exterminate Eagles
September 26, 2009
By Daniel Porter of Shelby Co. High School
The Calera Eagle Soared all the way to Columbiana sucessfully, but once there hit a brick wall! An Eagle can easily out fly a Wildcat, but Shelby County dodn't use the air much with only two completions on the night by Dill (both for touchdowns), but on the ground a Wildcat can roll over any Eagle, as they did for 340 yards on the ground.
The opening kickoff was fumbled and Sophomore #10 Evan McNeal took matters into his own hands and recovered the ball at the Eagle's nine yard line. Leading three year starter #11 Braten Dill at QB with an easy short field. In two plays Senior Chris McDowell #33 punched the ball in, with the kick good the Wildcats took an early lead. 7-0 But it wouldn't hold would it? Well Calera first, real posession lead to not much as they were forced to punt leaving the pumped offense of Shelby with another short field. Again, a quick score came win Dill hit a tight end for a five yard TD toss, but who was that, #46? Who? Oh, only senior Josh Reid, sporting a new number makeing a diveing catch for six, seven after the kick! 14-0 Wow, Shelby looks good I wonder when Calera will pick it up? Not soon, as the first quarter closed, the second resumes in similar fasion. A score by Dill on a 1 yard ush gave a comforting 21-0 lead. This was suppose to be a good game wasn't it?
It was spectacular, to the Shelby County side, Calera did put up 7, but scoreing leader Tae Lewis decided he'd make a little noise, and caught a 46 yard pass before the half, and along with Dill having another rushing TD of eight yards, the Wildcats hit the lockroom up 35-7. The halftime show was a sample of what to expect Saturday as the Pride of Shelby County heads north to the Mid South band compition in Gadsden. Back in the action now, Tae lewis would put the final score on the board in the third with a rushing TD. The PAT was the first one missed all night for Shelby. Calera scored in the fourth as the Wildcats were licking their paws clean on the sidelines. A final score of 41-14 gave Columbiana something to talk about in the coffee houses in the morning, and all week as they prepare for their next victum!
Coach Herring said the game, starting with the fumble "...got the game started right." right meaning that's the way it was suppose to happen, a 41-14 exterminating of the Eagles!
