Cubs defeat Owls for final time

October 4, 2009
By Patrick Keys of Iaeger High School

Iaeger- It was an emotional night at Fanning Field in Iaeger as the Iaeger Cubs defeated their longtime county rivals the Big Creek Owls last night 46-26 Friday night. Next year the two schools will combine to become the new Riverview High School in Bradshaw. This year though was all about the last game played between two schools that have played each other 55 times since 1937. The high scoring game started with Iaeger, as they fumbled the ball in the endzone, but recovered and opened up with a 6-0 lead. Big Creek struck back with a Joel Thomas touchdown run at the 3:09 mark in the 1st to make it 6 all. Iaeger struck back as they got to the Owl one and quarterback Cody “action” Jackson scored on a quarterback keeper and with the two point conversion made it 14-6 Iaeger. The scoring was far from over as Iaeger scored on their next possession as Trey Bailey ran the ball into the endzone from 8 yards out at the 7:07 mark. Big Creek failed to move the ball their next possession and Iaeger capitalized on it as Jonathan Blankenship scored on a 2 yard run making it 30-6 Cubs. Before the half Big Creek got some momentum as Chad Franklin completed a 66 yard touchdown to his quarterback counterpart Cody Underwood making it 30-12 Iaeger at the half. In the second half, it was Iaeger, who came out running as Bradley Kelly scored from 9 yards out to make it 38-12 Cubs. Big Creek scored in the 4th on a Franklin 15 yard pass completion at the 9:45 mark. Bradley Kelly answered for Iaeger as he ran it in from 4 yards out at the 4:42 mark making it 46-18 Cubs. Kelly had 62 yards on 11 carries. The play of the game though was the last one by Big Creek. With 5 seconds left quarterback Cody Underwood Threw an 18 yard pass that was tipped in the endzone by a Cub played and landed safely in the arms of Richard Hale. The play was worthy of a top play and a great way to end this historic rivalry. Big Creek had 218 passing yards between Cody Underwood who went 9-13 for 115 yards and a score and Chad Franklin went 4-8 for 103 yards and a score. The leading Owl rusher was John Bailey who had 48 yards on 12 carries. Big Creek had 309 yards of total offense. For the cubs it was Trey Bailey who led the way on the ground with 112 yards on 13 carries. Cody Jackson went 2-3 for 46 yards. After the game balloons were released and a banner hung from the gym saying, “Now we are one, Riverview Raiders” Big Creek travels next week to Gilbert to face the Lions, while Iaeger will remain at home to face Wyoming East.
