ROCHESTER, Minn. – Jenny Nelson hit two of Winona State's three grand slams as the Warrior softball team swept Grand View in a doubleheader Tuesday in Rochester, Minn. Nelson's grand slam in game one lifted the Warriors to a 5-1 victory while Nelson and Mary Turitto each had bases loaded round-trippers in a 10-1 victory in game two.
Winona State recorded 23 hits in the doubleheader while also receiving strong pitching performances from Ashley Walker and Hanna Lythberg.
The Warriors struck in a big way in the bottom of the third inning in game one, with Nelson hitting her first grand slam of the day to put WSU up 4-0. Lexi Perez led off the inning by being hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by Reed Karsten. Grand View intentionally walked Ashley Walker to load the bases, setting up Nelson's bases-loaded bomb.
Grand View got on the board in the top of the sixth, putting together a pair of singles that scored Dani Hubbard. The Warriors got out of any further trouble in the inning thanks to a spectacular diving catch by Brooke Piotrowski in center field.
Winona State got that run back in the bottom of the sixth, with Piotrowski singling and coming home on a base hit by Karsten.
Walker put together a strong performance in her pitching debut, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out five. The junior carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up a pair of singles in the frame.
After giving up a run in the top of the first in game two the Warriors struck back in the bottom of the frame, scoring five times to take a 5-1 lead. Karsten and Walker each recorded singles and Jenny Nelson was intentionally walked to load the bases. Morgan Lintz singled home WSU's first run of the game, bringing Turitto to the plate who smashed her first career home run, a grand slam over the fence in right-center.
The Warriors loaded the bases again in the fourth, with Walker scoring one on a RBI single. Jenny Nelson followed with her second grand slam of the day, a shot to center field that scored Piotrowski, Karsten and Walker while moving the WSU lead to 10-1.
Pitching her first game as a Warrior, Lythberg settled down after allowing a run in the first inning, giving up just four hits on the contest while striking out two.
Seven different Warriors recorded multiple hits on the day, with Karsten leading the way with five hits. Lintz and Piotrowski each posted four hits on the day while Walker had three and Shannon Nelson, Jenny Nelson and Turitto each had two.
