Knights Split with Eagles -Wartburg College

MINNEAPOLIS-- Wartburg split its doubleheader with the University of Northwestern-St. Paul Friday. The Knights won the first meeting, 8-7, but fell 12-11 in the final game.
In the first game, the Eagles took the 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but freshman Taylor Smola (Stevens Point, Wis.) gave the Orange and Black the 3-1 lead with her three-run homer over the left field fence.
Wartburg added a run in the fourth on an RBI double by freshman Courtney Wikan (Waukon) and three in the fifth inning for the win.
Smola finished 2-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Britt Schoon went 2-3.
In the second game, the Orange and Black took the early 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from junior Britt Schoon (Waukee). Wikan doubled Wartburg's lead with her solo shot over the left field fence.
Northwestern tied the score with a run in the fourth and fifth.
Schoon started the seven-run sixth inning with her leadoff solo home run. Smola drove in freshman Courtney Belk (Bettendorf) and junior Jess Brunko (Independence) on her single and the next batter, Schoon, drove in two on her double to right centerfield to make the score 9-2.
The Eagles slugged a two-run home run in their next at-bats to make the score 9-4 after six innings.
Wartburg extended its lead to 11-4 with two runs in the top of the seventh before Northwestern rallied with a eight-run frame and won on a walk-off single.
Belk, junior Katie Wyman (Springville) and Schoon all finished 3-5 at the plate.
The Knights conclude their trip with a doubleheader against Augsburg Saturday.
