Green TopsTU Depth Chart At Quarterback

Cody Green just wants to be one of the guys.

“it was funny how fast I was able to step in here,” the TU quarterback said following Saturday’s scrimmage. “This team welcomed me with open arms.”

The transfer from the University of Nebraska said he instantly felt at home when he stepped on the University of Tulsa campus.

“I’ve had more fun in the year I’ve been here than I ever have had playing football,” he said. “I couldn’t ask for a better place to play.”

Green completed 8-of-9 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s scrimmage. On Monday, he was named the starter over Kalen Henderson by head coach Bill Blankenship.

"Probably the biggest separation between Cody and Kalen is the experience that Cody brings to the table having played in 17 games at Nebraska,” Blankenship said. “He just seems to have a little more poise and control right now. There were certainly days that Kalen performed better, and days that Cody played better. But for me, if it's close, I like playing with a guy that has more experience and ultimately that's probably why I decided that way.”

Green knows there’s no time to slack off.

“I’ve have to continue to work hard,” he said. “I’m building relationships. I want these guys to know I can be a leader.”

That begins with building chemistry among his offensive mates, he said.

“The offensive line is one of the hardest places to be accepted because those guys put their lives on the line every day for you,” said Green. “Once they see that you will do it for them, then you know you have them. I guess I did something right.

“The receiving corps, you start throwing balls to them and they like it. They are easy to please. The running backs are the same way. You give them the ball and they’re happy. It’s just been tremendous.”

Henderson, the backup to G.J. Kinne last year, was 8-of-14 passing for 68 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 35 yards on five carries.

"We absolutely feel comfortable with both Cody and Kalen. There's no question that we'd feel good going into a game with either Cody or Kalen,” Blankenship said. “I feel very confident that we have those two, and maybe two more that we would not be afraid to be playing against Iowa State in the season opener.

“But, if I'm choosing right now the edge goes to Cody. I think most of that edge comes from the fact that he's played in more games. It's the appearance that he has. He's a calm and poised leader.”

Blankenship also indicated that a pair of walk-ons, kicker Chad Levin and quarterback Stephen Rouse, have informed him of their plans to transfer.
