TU Men Earn First-Round Bye in Tournament

Tulsa earned the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament, thereby getting a bye in the first round.

The Golden Hurricane will play the winner of Marshall-SMU on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at FedEx Forum. TU’s longest win streak this season came in the middle of the conference schedule, winning seven games. Since then though, the Golden Hurricane have won three of seven and enter the tournament on a two-game losing streak.

“We have to get ourselves in a good place mentally,” Tulsa coach Doug Wojcik said after Saturday’s loss to Memphis. “Coming off of our Wednesday game, to stay fresh and be alert and keep their legs for this game, that's the biggest thing. Now you're talking about playing three days in a row, so it's about feeling good and confidence."

Sophomore guard Jordan Clarkson leads the Hurricane in scoring at 16.6 points per game. Scott Haralson and Steven Idlet also are averaging double figures at 11.0 and 10.3, respectively.

TU Women face East Carolina in First Round

Tulsa will look to get out of the first round of the conference tournament for the first time since 2008. The Golden Hurricane are 5-5 overall and were the league’s regular season and tournament champions in 2006.

The sixth-seed Golden Hurricane face 11-seed East Carolina in the tournament’s opening game Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

“I think we are going in to the tournament in a good frame of mind,” said TU women’s coach Matilda Mossman in a press release.  “I think over our last four games, our confidence has been building and there has been a big improvement in the way we’ve been playing.

“I don’t know if there is any team that would be a great team to play right now.  ECU is on a role so I think they are going to be a tough first round opponent.”

Tulsa has won three of its last four games, including a 75-70 victory over ECU at the Reynolds Center on Feb. 19.

In that game, Tulsa had four players in double figures, led by Taleya Mayberry with 22 points. Taylor Hooker added 17 followed by Chanice Scott with 15 and Tiffani Couisnard with 10.

East Carolina has won five of its last six games heading into the tournament. Shala Hodges and Chareya Smith lead the Pirates in scoring at 11.0 and 10.9 points, respectively.
