NEW HEADING 1
2nd to Westlake again
March 20, 2014By Charles Battles of Mt. Zion Spring Sports
The Mount Zion Bulldogs competed Friday and Saturday. We finished second place in both meets. The Friday meet was an odd format where we were limited on the number of events per athlete. The races that we ran for real were blowouts. We returned extremely late and had to be right back at it again early Saturday. We finished second on Saturday to Westlake again. There were 33 teams competing on Saturday and we did not come close to our best. Not to take anything away from Westlake. They are an elite team that is to be respected, but we have areas where we can get better. We gave away points in the pole vault becasue we were missing one of our vaulters. Our 3200 guys and girls missed the race because of a misunderstanding of when the race was going to run. We ran with a different leg on the 4x100 and the 4x400 and most of our main guys were tired from the back to back running. I, Coach Battles, take the blame on that. I was trying to simulate a two date meet format to prepare the guys for the state meet. I feel like we underperformed in at least 6 events and still finished second. Impressive but still not where we want to be.
We had two alumni show up at the meet Deangelo Cherry and Isis Cumming. It was a pleasure to see them. Both of them recieved scholarships for track and field. Deangelo Cherry is now running professionally and represents Asics. We have big hopes of him making the next summer Olympics.
Athlete of the meet for Friday was Justin Taybron and Athlete of the meet for Saturday was Johnaton Ross. He dropped nearly a whole second in the 110 hurdles.
