Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak to Five Games

January 3, 2013
By Alicia Mullings of PHOENIX COLLEGE

Phoenix College Women's Basketball extended their win streak to five games with their win over Tohono O'odham CC last night.  The Bears jumped out to an early 23-4 lead over the Jegos a lead in which the Jegos would be unable to come back from. Phoenix College went into halftime leading over Tohono O'odham 66-21.  In the second half the Bears would only allow the Jegos to score 19 points as the Bears would go on to score 37 more points.  Inevitably the Jegos would face too large of a deficit and Phoenix College would take the game 103-40 in their highest scoring game of the season.

The Bears spread out their scoring among the team as five Bears finished with double digit scoring. Shannon Stealy scored 11 points, nine of which came from three point range.  Co-captains Shelbie Hess and Antoinette Miller each put up 14 points.  Hess also grabbed 8 rebounds, had 4 steals and 4 assists. Miller had 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals along with her 14 points.  Daesha Jackson put up impressive numbers as she scored 17 points, has 4 assists and 5 steals.  Leading all scorers was sophomore point guard, Alyssa Gruber, as she scored a personal season high 18 points.  Gruber also added 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 7 steals to her standout performance.

Lilly Southwick helped her team by adding 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals while teammate Brett Larson added 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocks to the win.

The PC Women's Basketball team will take on Scottsdale Community College in their next matchup as they will travel to play the Artichokes on Saturday, January 5th at 6pm.
