Home » Softball NewsVYPE's Preseason No. 9 Softball -- Santa Fe IndiansFebruary 10, 2012 By Matt Malatesta of Santa Fe High SchoolNo. 9 The Santa Fe Indians The Class 4A State Champs
The Santa Fe softball team took the school to a place it had never been before. The Lady Indians won the Class 4A state tournament, the first state championship in school history in any sport.
"It was very overwhelming," coach Trish Leidy said. "I have to remind the girls and even myself sometime, not to get the big-head. We know how much work we put into it last year and we are willing to do it again. When we won district championships, we knew our local teams were gunning for us. Now it's everyone we play will give us their best game."
Santa Fe, which pounded teams into oblivion averaging over .300 as a team last year, say good-bye to five seniors who played a vital role in their run. While they will have to replace some run-producers, their pitching staff is back with the likes of Micaela Bouvier and Ciara Sunseri.
"In my opinion, Micaela is one of the best pitchers in Texas," Leidy said. "Ciara is also very good and pitched some big innings for us throughout the season. Having them back is big for us as we play in the toughest district in the state."
Returning on defense will be centerfielder Lindsay Campbell (SFA-commit) and second baseman Rachel Tassin, who also can crush the ball. Aubri Hockenbury and Allison Franco will also battle for infield spots, while Kristina Evans can virtually play anywhere.
