It’s not often that a college coach will find anything positive about having to take his team 20 miles from campus to practice.
But you won’t be getting any complaints from St. Catharine cross county and track coach Blake Jones about the Springfield school not having facilities for his sport.
Because the Patriots use Bardstown High School’s track, Jones has had a front row seat to watch Tiger star Brandon Price in action.
And it paid off for St. Catharine and Price as the Bardstown senior inked a letter of intent to run cross country and track in front of his classmates in the school auditorium recently.
“I got to see him run every day, and he’s such a pretty good-sized kid so I thought he was a senior last year,” Jones said. “I’ve been aware of his times and knew he was the type of kid that we want to build our program.”
Price says that St. Catharine has been a school that he’s been interested in for a while.
“I wanted to go to a small school and it’s local,” Price said. “I got to know the coach last year and I have a few friends over there and it’s the most comfortable choice.”
Jones and Jeremy Dale, who has coached Price during his high school career, believe big things could be in store for him at the collegiate level.
“He is a kid who has a high talent level and can be an All-American,” Jones said.
Jones added that he expects Price to be particularly strong during the cross- country season when he runs the 8K. When the track season rolls around, Price will specialize in the 1500 meter.
“We may also try him in the steeplechase and see how he does in that event as well,” Jones said.
Dale noted that Price was his team’s best cross country runner and has been a stalwart in the 400, 800 and the mile during the track season.
“I would say that he is one of the best distance runners who have come through Bardstown,” Dale said. “He’s been on the heels of beating the times of some of our record-holders in distance runners. He’s very close to some school records
. And those records are held by some guys who have run for the University of Kentucky.”
Price, the son of Becky Price and stepson of Joey Sanders, says that he will major in computer engineering or business.
