LEBANON — Bardstown is headed back to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2011, and the Tigers did it in dominating fashion, beating all three opponents in the 5th Region tournament by double digits along the way.
Tuesday’s latest victim was Elizabethtown, as Bardstown got off to a hot start in the 5th Region championship at Marion County High School and rolled to a 61-44 win to punch their ticket to Rupp Arena and next week’s Sweet 16.
Just like the last time Bardstown (26-6) made it to the state tournament, the Tigers’ first-round opponent will be the 6th Region champion, only this time around the foe will be Pleasure Ridge Park (26-7), at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in Lexington.
The Tigers were led in scoring by Tavon Johnson with 16. Johnson scored nine of the Tigers’ first 10 points, then dished out an assist to help his team jump out to a 15-6 lead over the first six minutes and change of the game. Keanu Young had 14.
Ja’von Cotton’s 15 points led
Elizabethtown (23-9). The Tigers also beat the Panthers the last time they won the 5th Region crown in 2011.
