"To have any kind of victory, especially a tournament victory is of great importance," Amory coach Jason Kelly said. "These guys have not won in so long. For them, success, especially against teams they know, it's a real confidence booster. Tournament ball is unlike like any other. There's no prep time. It about who wants it more." Amory won a thriller Friday to get to the title game beating Smithville 67-66 on a free throw from Jaylon Fair. Zack Stephenson put back the tying bucket in the waining seconds but Fair was fouled and hit the second of three free throws to win. Amory led by eight at the half. Kelly said Fair arose to the occasion in a very loud Hatley gym. In Saturday's win, Dario Robinson had 21, Justin Lackey 18. For Hatley, Chris Tartt had 15. Saturday Games In the girls final, Hatley won the tournament championship 50-41 against Tremont behind 17 points from Lachelle Vance, 13 from Jamelle Vance and 11 from Katie Beth Worthy. (G) Amory 47 Smithville 23 Amory won its second game of the season behind 18 from Neondra Carter and 16 from Alexandria Thompson. Kami Roberts led Smithville with 10. (B) Smithville 63 Tremont 39 Munchie Freeman scored a game-high 25 for the Seminoles (1-1). Darune Freeman added 16. Friday's games (G) Hatley 64 Smithville 31 Lachelle Vance had 15 points to lead three Lady Tigers (4-2) in double digits. Aryn Clark and Deanna Wright each had 10 points. Katy Stephenson had 17 for Smithville. (B) Hatley 63 Tremont 54 Grant Hawkins' 16 led four Tigers in double figures, followed by Demarcus Hampton's 15, Chris Tartt's 11 and Jake Self's 11. Daniel Sturdivant had 14 for Tremont. (G) Tremont 61 Amory 43 Alexandria Thompson had 18 points in the loss for Amory. Emalee Fielding's 20 led four Tremont scorers in double figures. (B) Amory 67 Smithville 66 Munchie Freeman had 29 points in Smithville's season-opener. Datrune Freeman had 19 but Amory (6-1) won behind 19 from Justin Lackey and 15 from Dario Robinson.
