Record Previous

1. South Panola 1-0 1

Last week: Open. Friday: vs. Hoover, Ala.

The Buzz: Tigers look to avenge last season's nationally televised 23-14 loss to Alabama powerhouse Hoover. South Panola's only points in 12-10 season-opening win vs. West Point came via field goals, so offense may need to score in this one.

2. Meridian 2-0 2

Last week: Beat Wayne County 34-21. Friday: vs. Canton

The Buzz: Richard Quarley rushed for 147 yards and  Austin Holt had 107 yards to help the Wildcats break away in the second half in a game that was knotted 14-14 at the half. It was Meridian's 28th straight regular-season win.

3. Olive Branch 2-0 3

Last week: Beat Memphis Trezevant 38-14. Friday: Open

The Buzz: The Conquistadors scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to pull away and roll to their 17th consecutive victory. Sam Craft threw for 125 yards and also rushed for two TDs, while Jap Payne rushed for 87 yards and a score.

4. Lafayette 2-0 4

Last week: Beat Greenwood 41-0. Thursday: at Oxford

The Buzz: Lafayette has defeated Greenwood by a combined score of 83-0 over the past two years. Now the Commodores, whose winning streak is at 34, face rival Oxford in Crosstown Classic that will be televised on Fox Sports South.

5. Picayune 2-0 5

Last week: Beat Petal 56-35. Friday: vs. Forrest AHS

The Buzz: No team in the state has been more impressive through the first two games than the Maroon Tide, which racked up 510 rushing yards (219 by Desmond Taylor) against the Panthers. It was Picayune's second win over a Super 10 team.

6. Madison Central 1-1 7

Last week: Beat Starkville 24-8. Friday: at Petal

The Buzz: Jaguars avoid second straight 0-2 start, avenging last season's 16-14 loss to the Yellowjackets. Quarterback Jake Schwartz, making his second start, threw for 126 yards and a touchdown and ran for another 58 yards.

7. Brandon 2-0 9

Last week: Beat Pearl 35-0. Friday: vs. Clinton

The Buzz: Bulldogs, led by a rock-solid defense and a 3-touchdown performance from Davien Tillis, shut out rival Pearl for the first time since 1970. It was the Bulldogs' first shutout since beating Forest Hill 31-0 in 2005.

8. Petal 1-1 6

Last week: Lost to Picayune 56-35. Friday: vs. Madison Central

The Buzz: Fresh off a convincing road win over Wayne County, the Panthers had no answer for Picayune in the second half. QB Larson Barkurn completed 15 of 25 passes for 200 yards, but most of that came in the first half that ended tied 21-21.

9. Biloxi 1-1 8

Last week: Beat St. Stanislaus 63-14. Friday: at Gautier

The Buzz: Biloxi rolled past the Rock-a-chaws, racking up 602 yards of offense, including 343 on the ground and 259 passing. Danny Lewis had 144 rushing yards and Mousa Hasan added 114 yards.
