It’s tough for Hatley fastpitch coach Chris George to find anything new to say about his Lady Tigers. What can you say about what seems to be the same team on the field for the past five seasons?
Hatley is entering its final shot at a Class 2A fastpitch title with these eight seniors.
George says early on it looks as if that experience is not that extensive though.
“It’s like we’ve never played before,” George said. “We’re struggling something awful right now in the field and it’s not batted balls, it’s just throwing the ball around. We’ve got a lot of work to do before we get to division.”
Hatley started the season 3-2, including an 11-3 loss at defending Class 3A champ Nettleton last week. The senior group consists of pitcher Lesley Hudson, shortstop Kelsey Wilson, catcher Deanna Wright, third baseman Taylor Barrett, outfielder and pitcher Lauren Sloan, outfielder Katy Duling, first baseman Mallory Ashcraft and DP Amber Fulton.
Sophomore Courtney Roberts has the tools to lead the team in hitting and base stealing and junior Jamelle Vance starts in the outfield. There are six freshmen and seven middle schoolers on the roster.
Hatley lost in the state finals in two games against East Webster last season in Ridgeland but George said getting back should be a legitimate goal.
Division play includes Baldwyn, New Site, Walnut and East Union.
“We should. There’s no reason we shouldn’t,” he said. “We’ve got the talent here, the personnel on the field, just got it going. They’re veterans. They’ve been here and done that. They’ll come out of it.”
