Danbury High School Margaretta rallies late to trip Danbury
Mark Hazelwood
These days, a 28-point second half is considered an outburst for the Margaretta boys basketball team, which it needed to rally from a third quarter deficit to beat Danbury Saturday night by a 44-35 score in a non-conference game at Margaretta High School.
After a 6-of-24 shooting effort from the floor in the first half, the Bears were much better with a 13-of-23 effort in the second half. Much of that was because of senior Devin Jones, who scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. He also added 11 rebounds for Margaretta (7-5).
"Offensively we're bad," Margaretta coach Troy Roth said. "Our kids know it, I know it ... it's wearing on us. We miss a few shots and you can see our confidence go down and we know it has to be fixed. Defensively we haven't been that bad. We're OK there, but our offense is just bad."
Meanwhile, things started poorly for the Lakers (3-8), but the team recovered to open up a 27-24 lead midway through the third quarter. However, an 11-0 run by the Bears saw them take the lead for good at the 3:34 mark of the quarter and go up 35-27 in the opening moments of the fourth.
The Lakers were running a deliberate offense with good ball movement, but nearly minute-long possessions resulted into turnovers with no shot attempts.
"We weren't attacking the gaps in their zone enough," Danbury coach Drew Davie said. "Zone is something we've struggled with all year. We're going to continue to work on that, and we know if we made the right passes and find the gaps we'll get open shots.
"But there was a while there in the third where we just passed it around with no results."
