GRIDIRON RIVALRY REVELRY RETURNS
2008 Great American Rivalry Seriesâ Comes to Sacramento
SACRAMENTO, Ca. - With the start of a new football season comes the return of the much-anticipated Great American Rivalry Seriesâ, presented by the United States Air Force. The fifth annual Series, created to showcase top high school football rivalries across the nation, will feature the historically heated contest between Christian Brothers High School and Jesuit on Saturday, September 27.
Once again, fans will overcrowd Hughes Stadium to watch the Falcons and Marauders vie for victory in the "Holy Bowl" rivalry. This tradition-rich, annual rumble dates back to 1969, with Jesuit leading the series 21-14-2.
The Jesuit-Christian Brothers game is one of only 20 must-see games selected for the Rivalry Series this fall. As part of the Series, the winning team earns bragging rights along with the coveted title of "2008 Great American Rivalry Champion" and is presented with the Champion's Trophy by a member of the United States Air Force. A "Most Valuable Player" is also recognized, and the Series awards the top student athlete from each school a college scholarship. Fans from across the country and overseas can tune into the game live over the Internet via the iHigh Broadcast Network (iBN) by going to www.ihigh.com.
In preparation for the main event, students from both schools are encouraged to become part of the excitement and show their school spirit by entering the United States Air Force Spirit Video Contest. Videos can be submitted online at www.airforce.com/rivalry and will be rated by online viewers. The winning video from each school will be announced during the game.
"The Air Force is extremely excited about being a part of the Great American Rivalry Series," said MSgt Richard Davis, Marketing NCO. "High energy events such as this, that represent dedication and teamwork, embody the Air Force's core values of Excellence, Integrity and Service Before Self. The Air Force is proud to be associated with these great games and outstanding athletes."
The Great American Rivalry Series emerged from a desire to celebrate the cultural phenomenon of Friday night high school football. The Series shines the spotlight on classic gridiron clashes where expectations are sky high and die-hard fans abound.
For many seniors, this may be the last big game of their high school career and the climax of their "Glory Days." The Rivalry Series captures that moment and creates a memorable experience for athletes, students and fans that will be talked about long after the end of the season.
