Small Steps Key For Young Riley Grapplers

December 5, 2012
South Bend Riley High School

Experience means a lot when you wrestle in Northern Indiana.  Unfortunately for the Wildcats, experience is in short supply.  Riley has graduated 9 wrestlers each of the last 2 years and with school enrollment down, are entering the season with a team roster 60% their normal size.  But with team leaders like Scott Warner, Chase Hack and Dominique Avila don't take these Cat's lightly.

“We’re awfully young,” said Riley coach Bill Flatt. “It’s going to be a long learning process.”

Six Mishawaka wrestlers went 5-0 on the day. Jake Sinkovics (106-pound weight class), Jake Chadwick (113), Tommy Forte (138), Tristan Macri (145), Tanner Bradley (170) and Clint Proctor (182).

Grant Martsolf was 4-0 at 132.

Plymouth had three guys go 5-0: John Mills (106), Cody Allmon (113) and DeAndre Pickford (220 and 285).

The Rockies are a much-improved bunch, and showed tremendous poise under pressure. Trailing Riley 23-12 midway through their matchup, Plymouth ran off six straight wins to take a 38-23 victory.

“Our young kids are really coming through for us,” said Plymouth coach Bob Read. “We had a real good incoming freshman class and we had some kids who committed to the off-season, so it has made a difference.”

Three Riley wrestlers also went 5-0: Scott Warner (132), James Malone (170) and Dominique Avila (195).

Warner — better known as a soccer player — and Avila each have 16-0 records thus far.

“I came in from soccer in pretty good shape,” said Warner. “The endurance (training) really helps. But wrestling uses every muscle.”

TEAM RESULTS: MISHAWAKA 5-0, LOWELL 4-1, PLYMOUTH 4-1, HARRISON (LAFAYETTE) 3-2, PERU 2-3, RILEY 1-4, NORTHRIDGE 1-4, MUNSTER 0-5.
