ARLINGTON VOICE WEEK EIGHT FOOTBALL PREVIEW

 

DISTRICT 3-5A

Bowie Volunteers (6-1, 4-0) at Sam Houston Texans (2-5, 1-3)

THE SERIES: Sam Houston leads the series, 14-13-1, but Bowie has won the last seven. The Texans own a 9-7-1 edge at Wilemon Field, although they haven’t beaten Bowie there since 2002.

LAST WEEK: Bowie remained undefeated in 3-5A play with a 63-35 rout of Lamar, while Sam Houston lost to Arlington, 49-19.

VERY PERRY: This will be the 11th Bowie-Sam Houston game for Bowie coach Kenny Perry, who has coached on both sides. Perry is 9-1 in these games, going 3-1 against Bowie for the Texans (2000-03) and 6-0 against Sam Houston for the Vols (2006-11).

Martin Warriors (5-2, 4-0) at Lamar Vikings (3-4, 2-2)

THE SERIES: The Vikings lead the series, 18-8-2, although Martin has won the last four and five of the last six. Lamar also owns a 14-8-1 edge at Cravens Field. 

LAST WEEK: Lamar was overwhelmed by Bowie, 63-35, the most points ever allowed by the Vikings. The previous record was 56, set by Arlington High in 2009. Martin crushed North Crowley, 47-7.

FINE AS NINE: Martin has now won nine consecutive district games, equaling the school record, set from 2009-11.

GETTING THEIR KICKS: Martin’s Ben Grogan set a new Arlington ISD record last week with six field goals against North Crowley. Grogan broke the city record of five, held by Sam Houston’s Ryan Liner in 1997, and his own school record of four, set against Lamar last season. In addition, Grogan’s 56-yarder in the third quarter is the third-longest in city history. Ironically, it’s also the third-longest in school history, trailing Jaden Oberkrom’s 60-yard blast against Sam Houston last year, and Trey McCord’s 57-yarder against Lamar in 2003.

Arlington Colts (6-1, 3-1) at FW Paschal Panthers (2-5, 0-4)

THE SERIES: The Colts lead the series, 10-4, and haven’t lost to Paschal since 1966. This will be the first meeting at Clark Field in Fort Worth.

LAST WEEK: Arlington High routed Sam Houston, 49-19, while Paschal dropped a 31-28 decision to Weatherford.

THE GAMES THAT COUNT: Paschal has lost 18 consecutive district games, and 48 of its last 49. The Panthers’ only success was a 40-21 win over North Crowley in 2009.

THE SERIES: The series is tied at 1-1, with each team winning on the other’s home field.

LAST WEEK: Seguin remained alive in the playoff chase by out-scoring Waxahachie, 44-33, while Legacy was drilled by Ennis, 47-0.

RUN TO DAYLIGHT: The Cougars established a new school record last week with 460 yards rushing against Waxahachie. The previous record was 411, set against Fort Worth Eastern Hills in 2004.

THE COUGAR-BRONCO SERIES:

2008  Seguin, 24-3 (Anderson)

Summit Jaguars (2-5, 2-2) at Ennis Lions (7-0, 4-0)

THE SERIES: This will be the first meeting between Summit and Ennis.

LAST WEEK: Summit was nosed out by Red Oak, 32-29, while Ennis blasted Mansfield Legacy, 47-0.

 

DISTRICT 7-5A

Cedar Hill Longhorns (4-3, 3-1) at Timberview Wolves (3-4, 2-2)

THE SERIES: Cedar Hill leads the series, 2-0, including the only previous meeting at Vernon Newsom Stadium.

LAST WEEK: Cedar Hill clobbered Grand Prairie, 68-7, while Timberview lost to South Grand Prairie, 35-24.
