Frankfort senior CJ Gerald is eyeing a trip to the state finals, and the 400-meter dash – the event Gerald won at last week’s Lafayette Jeff Sectional, is his best chance to make it.
However, Gerald is one of many fighting for one of the top-three spots, which is where competitors have to finish in today’s Lafayette Jeff Regional in order to qualify for the IHSAA State Finals.
Gerald is seeded sixth in the event (50.34 seconds), behind Fishers junior Diquis Manley (49.20), Tri-West junior Austin Lazaro (49.35), Carmel sophomore Zach Woods (49.80), Hamilton Southeastern senior Tyler Duffy (50.14) and Hamilton Southeastern senior David Calhoun (50.21).
There’s also an outside shot that – with the field as strong as it is – Gerald could hit the state standard time of 49.40, but he’d have to be nearly a second faster than he was at the sectional.
Clinton Central sophomore Jordan Petty is also in the 400 championship heat, seeded ninth (51.76).
Gerald is also seeded sixth in the 200 (23.23).
Rossville’s 400 relay team of James Baker, Tyler Green, Kirk Holden and Aron Long is seeded 14th (46.97). Frankfort’s 1,600 relay team of Gerald, Cory Jakes, Jesse Ricker and Jessie Rodriguez is seeded ninth (3:32.17). Frankfort junior Jacob Barnes is seeded 14th in the shot put (44 feet, 8 inches) and Frankfort junior Cory Jakes and Clinton Prairie sophomore Dallas Miller are seeded 12th in the pole vault (11-6).
Rossville junior Austin Stewart qualified for the 3,200, but was not listed in the program as running in the event.
