Rosemount Irish Alumni Meet 2013
August 17, 2013Rosemount Cross Country
Senior Hannah Grim, a Marquette basketball recruit, led a 1-6 sweep as the varsity won for the 14th time in the 15 year history of the women's race. Grim recorded a time 20 seconds better than her winning performance of a year ago. The Alumni came to the meet with a squad of 20 strong, led by the McLaughlin sisters of Michaela and Caroline. A record 67 women completed the challenging RHS layout.
St. Olaf's Calvin Lehn ('12) threatened, but did not break Notre Dame grad Jordan Carlson's course record, but his 9:47 led the Alumni to their 6th straight victory. The varsity received a surprise runner-up finish by junior Alex Berhe to put a little scare into the Alumni, who were short-handed due to weddings (Kyle Rosseau - married and Jordan Carlson - groomsman dinner) and work confict (Jason Quarford, his first no-show since he was a 7th grader in 1997). Lehn was bolstered by South Dakota State recruit Trevor Capra ('13), Hamline sophomore Nathan Rock ('12), Drake graduate and marathon standout Mike Bumgarner ('07), and MIAC 4x800 champion Chris Mergens of St. John's. St. Thomas recruit Tommy Linder and Eau Claire 800 All-American Wes Fischer ('05). The alumni had just short of 30 guys in their deep and formdiable line-up. Aaron Sailer ('99) continued his unblemished streak with his 17th consecutive alumni meet, being on the winning side in 12 of the 17 matches.
The 9th annual kids race lived up to its billing as the most entertaining race. The pre-race picture was an art in patience as the kids acted like kids. Many different strategies were utilized in the around-the-tree and back race. Some strategies included meet the leader and turn, wander off course and slip back, the fake tired carry me routine, and the utilization of the subway to get back quicker. Meet officials were up in arms about the aid the runners received from their parents and other well wishers, but vowed a 10th annual race will be held again next year.
