Rocky Mount loses in first round of state volleyball playoffs

ROCKY MOUNT - For Rocky Mount High, its ultimate end was decided by a couple of beginnings.
The Gryphons (11-9) were eliminated from the NCHSAA 3-A state playoffs with a 3-1 defeat to Jacksonville White Oak on Thursday at Rocky Mount High School.
Rocky Mount played two close games with White Oak (16-7) – the bookend games – and split them, but lost because it fell behind in the second and third frames.
“White Oak is a tough team full of volleyball players,” Rocky Mount coach Tabitha Wilcox said. “We have to play a smart game as opposed to a strength game, and they outsmarted us all day.”
