Lady Gryphs blast Eastern Wayne

ROCKY MOUNT - Thirty-nine turnovers told the story for Eastern Wayne.
That's the total the Lady Warriors racked up Tuesday evening after Rocky Mount laid a 66-33 whopping on them in the opening round of the NCHSAA 3-A women's state basketball playoffs.
The victory moved Rocky Mount to 21-4 on the season and it will host Havelock in a second-round matchup Thursday at 7 p.m.
Through the game's first 12 1/2 minutes, Rocky Mount had allowed Eastern Wayne just one point - a Brittany Franklin free throw at the 2:26 mark of the first period. RMHS led 25-1 until Eastern Wayne finally got its first field goal of the evening.
The Lady Gryphons, NEW 6 Conference regular season and tournament champions, led 35-9 at halftime after forcing EW into 26 turnovers - 15 in the first period alone.
Another 10-0 Rocky Mount run gave it a 46-13 lead late in the third period. The Lady Gryphons were in complete control the rest of the contest.
Lady Gryphon freshman Tia Hudgins led all scorers with 17 points. Senior forward Dyonna Battle had 10 and junior Alexis Farmer had just eight points, but she pulled down 13 rebounds.
