Home » Girls' Tennis NewsRM's Warner wins Big East singles titleOctober 17, 2011 Rocky Mount High SchoolWILSON - Rocky Mount's Mackenzie Warner won the singles title at the 2011 Big East Conference girls tournament last Thursday. It was held at the Barton College courts. Warner, the No. 3 singles player for the Gryphons, defeated Northern Nash's Katie Beamon in the finals 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3). The doubles tandem of Elizabeth Thompson and Caroline Bell fell in the semifinals. As for the team, it will open the NCHSAA 3-A state playoffs with a first-round trip to West Carteret. The individual regionals will be held at Barton starting Friday. "I was really pleased with the way everyone played at the tournament." said Rocky Mount head coach Barry Nethercutt. "I think we made some nice progress in showing how hard we've been working and it showed in the results. The girls played smart and hard and pulled off some nice wins."
But Warner was the one who really shined. "The highlight of the tournament though was Mackenzie, who showed amazing stuff both days," Nethercutt said. "On Wednesday, she played two marathon matches against two of the better players in the conference. She injured her foot in the first match and it really bothered her on Thursday. But we didn't let anyone else know how bad it was hurting and she gutted out two great wins. "I really like the way everyone is hitting the ball right now and as I have said before, I really like the toughness this team has. It could be a fun next few weeks." 2011 BIG EAST GIRLS TENNIS TOURNAMENT @ Barton College, Wilson Singles results RD 1
