Battle joins 1,000-point club in win at Kinston; Vikes blow out Gryphs
January 5, 2009 By Charles Alston of Rocky Mount High School
KINSTON - After a lackluster performance in her last outing during the Nash County Christmas Tournament (1 point), Rocky Mount senior Dyonna Battle finally crossed over the 1,000-point mark for her career as the Lady Gryphons beat Kinston 45-32 Saturday evening in an endowment contest.
Battle now joins the late Kim Taylor, Danielle Powell and Latoya Armstrong as the only girls basketball players in Rocky Mount High School history to score 1,000 points or more in a career. She scored 21 points Saturday, 18 in the second half, to give her 1,011 for her career.
But the Gryphon boys didn't fare well in their heated contest with the No. 1-ranked Vikings in the nightcap.
A near-capacity crowd watched junior UNC recruit Reggie Bulluck fire in 21 first-half points en route to a 30-point night as Kinston blew out the Gryphons 93-68.
Despite Rocky Mount (6-5) landing five players in double figures for the first time this season, Kinston (11-2) used a hot shooting touch and its transition game to give the Gryphons fits all night.
RMHS junior Tashawn Mabry finished with 17 points to lead the Gryphons.
