Home » Girls' Tennis NewsRMHS girls tennis gets off to a 2-0 startAugust 18, 2011 By Charles Alston of Rocky Mount High SchoolEDENTON - The 2011 Rocky Mount High girls tennis team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-3 defeat of Edenton Tuesday on the road. The day before, the Gryphons took on Currituck High School and prevailed 9-0 in the season opener. That match was played on the courts at Chowan University in Murfreesboro. "This (vs. Currituck) was a pretty good first match to start with," said head coach Barry Nethercutt. "We had some very competitive matches, but it should have been one to give the girls some confidence. Elizabeth (Thompson) had two close sets but at the end of each set she really closed each out perfectly. Tanner (Brice) struggled early in her firsthigh school match, but she'll do well as the season goes on. "We have spent a great deal of summer work on doubles and although it was far RMHS had a tougher time with the Aces on Tuesday, but won solidly with winning two of three doubles matches. "I was really pleased with our consistency at Edenton," Nethercutt said. "That is going to be our strength in singles and it's taken some work, but I think the RMHS hits the road Thursday with a trip to C.B. Aycock. Game time is 4 p.m.
