Home » Girls' Basketball NewsRMHS girls drop a spot in NCPreps.com 3-A pollFebruary 17, 2011 By Charles Alston of Rocky Mount High SchoolHAMPTONVILLE - For the first time this season, two Nash County basketball teams are ranked in the NCPreps.com HS/Media Basketball Poll. In the 3-A Girls Poll released Monday, Rocky Mount and Northern Nash are both ranked. The Lady Gryphons have been residents of the poll since its debut week just after Christmas. But Northern, which early on received some votes to warrant honorable mention notice, jumped into the top 10 this week on the strength of its 52-39 upset of then-No. 3-ranked Rocky Mount on its floor last Friday night in their regular season finale. How important was that win? It was good enough to get Northern a share of the Big East Conference title. Both teams ended up with league records of 9-1. On the strength of that victory, the Lady Knights (18-2), whose only losses this season have been to Rocky Mount, received 19 points -- enough to make it to the No. 9 poll spot. The Lady Gryphons (21-3) dropped one position to No. 4 this week with 73 points. North Iredell leads the poll with 11 first-place votes and 118 points overall. Rocky Mount is the top seed in this week's Big East Conference Tournament by virtue of its win over Northern in Nash County Holiday Basketball Tournament. The tourney will run through this Friday night's boys and girls championship outings at the historic RMSH Gymnasium. Both the Lady Knights and the Lady Gryphons will also be in action beginning next week as part of the Class 3-A State Girls Basketball Playoffs. Pairings for the playoffs will be finalized this coming weekend by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. NCPreps.com Class 3A Girls Basketball Poll 1. North Iredell (11) 19-1 - 118 2.
