After sweeping doubles in Monday's 8-1 victory in Stanhope, the Firebirds lost two of three doubles and the match 5-4 at Sunset Park. Head coach Brad Joyner said it was the first conference loss since 2002 for Southern Nash, ranked No. 4 among state 3-A teams and a state finalist in each of the past two years. The Firebirds slipped to 14-2 overall and 9-1 in the Big East where they now share the top spot with the Gryphons (11-2, 9-1). No. 1 Res Bosshard, No. 4 Will Matthews and No. 5 Kris Amin won singles matches for the Firebirds while Amin-Kaleb Vater took an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles. The match came down to No. 2 doubles where Rocky Mount's Ross Bradley-John Hader took a 6-3 lead on Armando Villareal-Matthews. But the Firebirds tandem fought back to tie the score 6-6 before Bradley-Hader won the last two points and the match. ROCKY MOUNT 5, SOUTHERN NASH 4 Singles Res Bosshard (SN) def.
