ROANOKE RAPIDS - The Roanoke Rapids soccer team struck first versus powerhouse opponent Rocky Mount, but it was the Gryphons who had the last laugh, defeating the Yellow Jackets, 4-1.
Rocky Mount scored four unanswered and put up a solid wall of defense in front of the Roanoke Rapids net.
"We never got ourselves organized," Yellow Jackets Head Coach Terry Frazier said. "To be honest with you we probably need some better practice time. Hopefully we'll do better the next time against them. We'll get some good work in (Tuesday)."
Katie Smith quickly got Roanoke Rapids on the board with a goal at the 33:38 mark to put the home team ahead, 1-0.
But the Gryphons would put the next four through the net and pitch a shut out the rest of the way. Bailey Lewis put Rocky Mount on the board first with a goal from the right side of the formation, followed by a shot from Lacey Webb from 10-yards out.
Yellow Jacket Jessica Scales missed two golden opportunities for Roanoke Rapids right before half-time and the Gryphons led at the break, 2-1.
Sydney Browder and Kasey Cooke scored the only two goals of the second half for the visitors.
"Two of their four goals were great strikes," Frazier said. "Not much you can do about them. But, we need to make some of those strikes ourselves if we are going to beat teams like this. When we get a shot we need to get it in that net."
Roanoke Rapids has a tough road slate ahead, starting with a trip to Wilson Fike Wednesday night. "We'll she what we are made of," Frazier said. "We'll try to get better tomorrow and get better the next day."
