Among the announced winners were the recipients of the school's five major awards - given out only once each sports year: Male and Female Athlete of the Year; Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and the Juan Chesson Award winner. East Carolina football signee and NCHSAA 3-A state champion hurdler (110 meters) senior Jacobi Jenkins, who won the award in Male Athlete of the Year in 2007, shared this year's honor with fellow senior Emmanuel Davis (football, wrestling). Junior Dyonna Battle, who starred in basketball and track, took home the Female Athlete of the Year award. The Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award was also shared as seniors Brooke Chambers and Ashley Pearsall received the honor. Senior class valedictorian John Deans was awarded Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Juan Chesson Award, given annually to honor the late 1985 Rocky Mount graduate's life as an student, athlete, teacher and coach, went to senior William Barringer.
